When temporarily installing W/98 [or any other older OS] DON'T choose the smaller disc option. They wouldn't even think about booting each others HDs.You had mentioned setting all your drives as Master Slave. I figured I'd take it out and sit it aside until a more suitable system came along that I could put it in. When you suggest swapping the drives, do you mean physically swapping the IDE connectors on the drives inside the PC case? [Really showing my ignorance now...] I've installed hard drives and click on StartOnce the file is done burning then simply exit Burncdcc. I generally install from a CD-R of XP slipstreamed with SP3.
And, I'm inclined to agree with Pete's assessment but let's run through a few things before sticking a fork in it. Its possible the XP copy wasn't burned properly and isn't bootable...Could test on a different machine. Then you are locked there and can go no further. The more I read here I move inexorably towards a failure of the motherboard.

I am not looking for obvious answers at this point. So I enabled only cd rom boot in bios setup and moved jumpers to cable select. I am thinking about upgrading all of the solved Is it possible to upgrade an old Dell Dimension E520 into a gaming computer? Don't forget to go back into the BIOS to enable the hard drive as a boot device.
The problem drives are all PATA, right?When you look in the BIOS, does the floppy still show as turned off? But you may be able to boot OS/2 into command line and then re-restore the backup with EAs or something.
